After Hours is the first episode of the first season of The Penguin.
Synopsis[]
"In the wake of Carmine Falcone’s death, Oz attempts to legitimize himself among Gotham’s criminal underworld."
Plot[]
One week after the Flooding of Gotham City, the city experiences a severe crime wave while rumors spread that Alberto Falcone is set to take over the Falcone Crime Family, after the assassination of his father, the late infamous crime lord Carmine Falcone.
Penguin arrives at the Iceberg Lounge to retrieve some valuable jewels and a blackmail ledger that Falcone owned for himself. However, he was caught by Alberto who held him at gun point. Penguin is able to trick him into lowering his guard by exploiting his addictive tendencies with alcohol and Drops and have a sit down to some drinks and drugs. Alberto then tells Penguin about a secret shipment of a new type of drug coming into Gotham that would revolutionize the Falcone drug operation and also confessed about wanting to gain respect as the new head of the Family. Penguin told Falcone about Rex Calabrese, and how he gained respect by helping those less fortunate in his neighborhood. Alberto, in a mix of paranoia and mockery, took this the wrong way and insulted Penguin's aspirations for being a powerful mobster himself, leading Penguin to impulsively shooting and killing Falcone. At first Penguin laughed at this, before he realized what he had done.
Penguin wraps up Alberto's body into a coat hanger bag and attempts to dispose of him. As he heads for his car, Penguin finds a group of juvenile delinquents trying to steal the rims of his car and starts shooting at them. Only one of them, Victor Aguilar, is left behind. Penguin planned to kill Victor but decides to spare him and forces Victor help him and warned Aguilar that he would murder him and anyone he cared about if he tried to run away or refuses. Penguin makes Victor to drive him around the city for multiple errands, including Eve Karlo, who provided Penguin with an alibi for him. In the morning, they drop Alberto's body in an unused car in a dump, and Penguin takes from his pinky a ring that previously was owned by Salvatore Maroni, Carmine's rival. Penguin explained his plan to kill Aguilar and stuff his body in the same car trunk. However, Aguilar convinced Penguin that he could help him, so Penguin decided to keep him around for now.
Penguin meets with Johnny Viti, the underboss of the Falcone Crime Family. He is informed that Penguin's drug operation will move to Robbinsville, and despite Penguin's protests, the decision is final. Attempting to save his position in the organization, Penguin begins to pitch Alberto's plan as his own, but he is interrupted by the arrival of Falcone's daughter, Sofia, known to the public as "The Hangman", a serial killer, and who has just been released from Arkham State Hospital. It is implied that Penguin had a hand in her imprisonment by denouncing her over to her father. Suspicious, she invites Penguin over for lunch at a fancy restaurant and reveals that she was in on Alberto's project and interrogates him over her brother's disappearance. Penguin tries to slither his way out by feigning ignorance and claiming he had Alberto's trust but was not informed about Sofia's part in the plan. She obviously does not believe him but leaves to investigates further.
He later gets Victor to accompany him to visit his mother, Francis Cobb, who suffers from early onset of dementia. He confesses to killing Alberto and tries to get her to leave Gotham City with him, but his mother chides him and convinces him that killing Alberto was only the first step to his rise in the criminal underworld. Inspired, Penguin forms up a plan of his own. He visits the Blackgate Penitentiary to talk with Salvatore Maroni. He offers to work as a double agent and help him destroy Falcone Crime Family, but Maroni is unwilling to trust so easily. Before he leaves, Penguin returns his ring to him.
While driving back to his apartment, Penguin is spotted by Sofia, who chases him down. He tries to lose her henchmen in the street but is caught and knocked unconscious. He is taken back to the Falcone Mansion, where Sofia reveals she captured one of the kids who tried to steal the rims of his car the night Alberto disappeared, who implicates him. Penguin adamantly lies and gets the boy killed, but he is nonetheless stripped and tortured, while Sofia demands to know Alberto's whereabouts. Suddenly, a car crashes into the garden, and Sofia opens the trunk to find Alberto's corpse, his pinky cut, and the word "Payback" scratched on the hatch. Oz is released and reunites with Victor, having secretly framed Maroni for Alberto's murder. As Penguin and Victor drink Slush Puppies together, Penguin reiterates his plan to take over the Falcone Crime Family, inviting Victor to be a part of his plan, which Victor accepts.
