- "We will rebuild. But not just our city. We must rebuild people's faith in our institutions, in our elected officials, in each other. Together, we will learn to believe in Gotham again."
- ―Bella Reál[src]
Bella Reál is a grassroots politician and the mayor-elect of Gotham City.
Biography[]
Early Life[]
Growing Up in Gotham[]
Bella Reál was born in Gotham City at some point in 1994. Not much is known about her childhood, although it is possible, that she grew fond of politics during her early youth, which was even more influenced by the city's never-ending corruption.
Political Career[]
Campaign Against the Mayor[]
- "The Renewal program is broken. This city's been renewing for twenty years, look where it's gotten us! Crime has skyrocketed, murder and drug use are at historic highs, and we have a masked vigilante running the streets."
- ―Bella Reál to Don Mitchell, Jr.[src]
In 2022, Reál launched a political campaign rivaling incumbent mayor, Don Mitchell, Jr., and became a mayoral-elect and candidate to the four-time incumbent. They pursued public debates talking about the atmosphere of Gotham City, and its crime, with Reál demoting Mitchell's work due to Gotham suffering from an ongoing Drops epidemic and the active operations of a masked vigilante. Mitchell was later murdered by the Riddler, leaving Reál with no opponent.
Confronting Bruce Wayne[]
- "You know, you really could be doing more for this city. Your family has a history of philanthropy, but as far as I can tell, you're not doing anything. If I'm elected, I want to change that."
- ―Bella Reál to Bruce Wayne[src]
Reál attended the funeral of Don Mitchell, Jr., and encountered reclusive billionaire Bruce Wayne, whom she attempted to contact numerous times before, to no avail. She spoke to him about his family's legacy of philanthropy, and how he didn't meet the standards of what his father and mother did for the city, persuading him to take a more active role in Gotham with the fortune he wields. Reál later spotted Mitchell's son and wife and went to go comfort them, however, she was interrupted when the Riddler ambushed the funeral by sending D.A. Gil Colson inside a car crashing into the Gotham City Hall.
Assassination Attempt[]
During election night, after Riddler's incarceration, he ordered his followers in a previous recording to assassinate Bella Reál, as a way of giving Gotham City "a real change". His followers did as he asked, and attacked Gotham Square Garden, with Jim Gordon ordering Bella to escort the building, but she resisted, eventually getting wounded by a sniper. Gordon escorted her out of the goons sight, as Batman entered the building and fought the goons. As Gotham City was eventually flooded due to the explosion of the seawall, Reál and others were stranded in the water, until Batman saved them as a way of signaling hope for the city.
Giving Hope to a Flooded Society[]
With Gotham City underwater, citizens were at an all-time low, but not Reál. As Reál had become the official mayor-elect of Gotham, she encouraged the citizens to strive during this time of crisis, as there was always hope out there.
Fight Against Corruption[]
After the flood caused by Riddler, Reál began an anti-corruption proyect to clean Gotham. Hady mentions that she's forming a comission and is going after every associate of Carmine Falcone.
Personality[]
- "That's the problem with this city. Everyone's afraid to stand up and do the right thing, but I'm not."
- ―Bella Reál to Jim Gordon[src]
Reál has a dedicated, confident, and fearless no-nonsense type of personality. She's dedicated to helping cleanup Gotham City's corruption through her mayoral campaign as she believes no one else will step up to do the job. She also isn't afraid to call out others for their faults. This is shown when she criticizes Bruce Wayne at Don Mitchell, Jr.'s funeral as she believes he isn't using enough of his wealth, power, and his reputation to help benefit the people of Gotham. She is also not afraid to stand up for what she believes in. This is best shown when, despite the protests of Jim Gordon for her to be evacuated to safety, she told him how the problem in the city is that everyone's afraid of stepping up and doing the job to clean it up before marching out to help reassure and direct citizens to safety.
Abilities[]
- "Reál, she's forming a commission, anti-corruption. They're going after cops, city officials. And they have a list of Carmine's associates. They're gonna subpoena you."
- ―Sebastian Hady to Penguin[src]
- Gifted Intelligence: Despite her young age, Reál was elected to be the new mayor of Gotham City. Mere weeks after election, she created a commission to fight corruption in the police department and the city council.
