- "You were right. I didn't see you. But she did. She knew it from the very beginning. You have always been a monster."
- ―Sofia Falcone to Penguin[src]
Sofia Gigante (née Falcone), also known as the Hangman, is the daughter of the late Carmine Falcone, a crime lord, and a mass murderer. Following her father's death at the hands of the Riddler and her brother's at the hands of the Penguin, she returns to Gotham City after a stint at Arkham State Hospital to gain power over the Falcone Crime Family as its new boss. After being betrayed by Penguin a second time, she massacred most of her immediate family members and reformed her father's empire into the Gigante Crime Family, with her as the boss.
After Penguin destroyed the Gigante Crime Family and kidnapped Sofia, instead of killing her, Penguin orchestrated a much worse fate for her; Sofia's worst nightmare came true, and she was sent back to Arkham indefinitely for her key role in the Bombing of Crown Point mass murder. In Arkham, she received a letter from Selina Kyle, her half-sister, giving her hope for the future.
Biography[]
Early Life[]
Childhood with Alberto[]
Born to Isabella Gigante and Carmine Falcone, the head of the Falcone Crime Family, Sofia and her older brother Alberto Falcone were very close growing up and lived their childhood happy and carefree, unaware that their Parents' marriage was falling apart. They’re often took them to a fancy Italian restaurant by their father, who used to pay them just to keep their elbows off the table.
Death of Her Mother[]
When Sofia was nine years old, her mother Isabella apparently committed suicide by hanging. Her body was discovered by Sofia, who had been playing hide and seek with her brother, Alberto. Upon finding her mother's body, Sofia reached for Isabella's hand, inadvertently noticing several wounds on her fingers and nails. Shortly after, Carmine rushed in and turned Sofia away from the body, continually telling her, "Don't look." She notices a number of scratches on his hand, but either thinks nothing of it or buries it as a traumatic memory.
Peaceful Life[]
Adolescent Years[]
During her adolescent years, Sofia and her cousin Carla Viti spent their summers at Lake Como in Italy, where they had "some had wild nights getting drunk and hanging out with "horny Italian boys", which Sofia recalls getting in some trouble for.[1]
Isabella Falcone Foundation[]
- "I've never been one for speeches, but... my mother, Isabella Falcone, struggled with depression for years. She never got the help that she needed, and when I was nine, she took her own life. That's why my father and I started this foundation. We wanted to support charities like this one that provide women and girls with life-saving services."
- ―Sofia Falcone[src]
Sofia and her father later founded the Isabella Falcone Foundation which donated to charities supporting women with mental health issues. During this time, Penguin, who had begun working for her family, was assigned as her personal driver. The two initially seemed to have a good relationship, with Sofia standing up for Cobb and speaking candidly with him often. While many in the family underestimated him, Sofia claims she always knew that he was more capable than he seemed.[2]
Sofia's Downfall[]
Finding Out the Truth[]
- "I've been following your work with the foundation. It's impressive. [...] But if you don't mind me saying, I think you could be doing more. I don't know if you're aware, but a young woman named Yolanda Jones committed suicide last week. There's actually been a number of women like Ms. Jones over the last decade, and they all died the same way, by hanging. Which... that's how your mother died if I'm not mistaken. [...]"
"You said there's something I could do to help."
"Yolanda Jones worked at the Iceberg Lounge. In fact, most of these women worked for businesses owned by your father."
"What organization did you say you were with?... I don't talk to press." - ―Summer Gleeson and Sofia Falcone[src]
In 2012, Sofia hosted a luncheon for the Foundation. Afterwards, a reporter named Summer Gleeson approached Sofia and informed her about the deaths of Yolanda Jones and several other women who had apparently died the same way that her mother did. These deaths had all been designated as suicides by hanging, but the common thread was that each of the women had worked at the 44 Below or the Iceberg Lounge, clubs owned by Carmine. Sofia dismissed her allegations upon learning that Gleeson was part of the press and left with Oz Cobb, who at the time was her personal driver. However, she kept Gleeson's card and began to question these deaths, as well as their similarity to that of her mother's.
Carmine Falcone's Offer[]
- "I've been thinking recently about the future... about our family's future. Maybe it's time to break the tradition. When the time comes, I want you to take my place. I want you to run this family... if that's something that would interest you."
"Yeah. Yeah, of course. I would be... honored. But the rest of the family-"
"They know you're mine. They'll do as I say." - ―Carmine Falcone and Sofia Falcone[src]
That evening, after having dinner with her family, Sofia receives life-changing news from her father. After expressing his doubts about Alberto's ability to one day lead the Family, Carmine has decided to name Sofia as his successor instead. While Sofia expresses that she is honored to be appointed his this position, Carmine notices a hint of hesitation. He asks what is wrong, leading Sofia to start asking seemingly innocuous questions about her mother's death and alleged history of depression. Carmine dismisses her concerns, stating that her mother was a "proud woman" who refused all help. He then turns cold, asking Sofia why she would begin to doubt him at such a critical time for her and the Family. She retracts, but her suspicions clearly remain unanswered.
Speaking to Alberto Falcone[]
- "Can I ask you something? The girls at the 44 Below, has dad ever had relationships with them?"
"Those girls aren't exactly the relationship type. Since when do you care about Pop's love life?"
"It's been a long time since mom, and he doesn't really talk to me about it, and... I don't know. You get to see a whole 'nother side of him. [...] But you know what I mean, It's very different with me. I just thought you might have seen something."
"What are you asking?"
"I guess I... Sometimes I wonder if I... really... really know him. Like, with all the lies that we had to tell growing up about what he does, and there's... there's a lot that we don't talk about." - ―Sofia Falcone and Alberto Falcone[src]
The next day, she attempts to ask Alberto if he knows about any of their father's clandestine affairs with the women at the 44 Below. Alberto dismisses her questions, not understanding what they imply.
Meeting with the Reporter[]
- "This is all you have? That's it? Just, like, some old reports and conspiracy theories? It's ridiculous. And it reeks of a junior reporter desperate for a byline. [...] You don't know shit about my father. He is a good man! And if you try publishing any of this garbage, my family will destroy you. Do you understand?"
- ―Sofia Falcone to Summer Gleeson
Unsatisfied, she agrees to meet with Summer Gleeson. Oz drove Falcone to meet Gleeson at the docks, where she shows Sofia her case files of the women that she suspects have been killed. She points out their numerous defensive wounds and the imprints on their necks, implying that each was actually strangled to death. While viewing these disturbing images, Sofia has a flashback of her own mother's body, which had the same wounds. When Gleeson asks her for more access to the 44 Below to further investigate the deaths of the women, Sofia snaps and threatens Gleeson. In a fit of rage, she snaps that if Gleeson dares to publish her story, that she will be "destroyed" by the Falcones, and leaves abruptly.
During the drive home, Oz questions Sofia speaking to the reporter, remarking that the Family could start asking questions. Sofia snaps at Oz, telling him that he is her driver and she doesn’t need his opinion. This deeply hurt Oz, and it would unfortunately be a grave mistake on Sofia's part.
Betrayed by her Father[]
- "I've never doubted you. I love you. And I know there's an explanation."
"An explanation for what?"
"You had scratches on your hands the day mom died. But I know they weren't from her. I know that. I... They were from... something else. I... I don't know what, but... Something. Right?"
"My... sweet Sofia. What has happened to you? You're clearly not yourself. You're confused, sick. I think you need to leave before you make a scene." - ―Sofia Falcone and Carmine Falcone[src]
Some time after, Falcone attended Carmine's birthday party at her family estate. She was approached by her cousin Carla, and the two begin a friendly conversation, joking about her Uncle Luca with his new bride Tina that he met in Portugal. However, they are soon interrupted by Oz, whom Sofia notes has breached his usual conduct by coming inside the party, and who also looks to be wearing a new jacket (implying that he has already reaped some benefits for betraying her). Oz informs her that her father wishes to speak with her in his office.
In his office, Carmine confronts Sofia about her meeting with Gleeson, accusing her of compromising her father by not informing him immediately. Sofia tries to calm him, insisting that all she did was dismiss the reporter, telling her to "go to hell", and that she didn't believe any of her claims. Carmine informs Sofia that GCPD has opened up a homicide investigation against him based on Gleesons' writings, information that he received from Detective William Kenzie (who has long been on Carmine's payroll). Sofia continues to plead with her father, but slips up and reveals that she herself harbors doubts about her father's involvement in her mother's death. In that moment, both realize that Sofia has come to the truth about the murders. Carmine immediately turns on her, dismissing her from the party and telling her to go home before she "causes a scene". She obliges, not yet knowing that her father intends to frame her for the crimes.
Framed as The Hangman[]
While on her way back home, Falcone vented her frustration to Oz, accusing him of ratting her out to her father so that he could finally be "noticed" and gain some status. Cobb defends himself by saying he was "only looking out" for Sofia, which is his job. Before they can continue arguing, Detective Kenzie and several other Police cars pull up, sirens blaring. They stop Cobb and demand that Sofia step out of the vehicle. Confused, both protest and ask if Carmine has sent the officers. Suddenly, Kenzie and a few other cops roughly pull Sofia from the car and arrest her for the murders of the hanged women, the latest of which is the reporter, Summer Gleeson. Sofia begins proclaiming her innocence immediately, and Cobb seems genuinely blindsided by her arrest, implying that he was fully unaware of Carmine's plan to frame Sofia for the murders. Sofia is shoved roughly into a patrol car while screaming for Oz to find Alberto to help her.
The next day, tabloids have dubbed Sofia as "the Hangman", and images of her mugshot appear on every newspaper. Her lawyer informed Sofia that the courts have ordered a psychological evaluation, as several members of the Falcone family have come forward with signed letters attesting to her apparently long history of violent mental illness, stemming from the death and illness of her mother. Immediately deducing that the letters and false reports are part of a setup to frame her for the murders, Sofia was shocked that the entirety of the extended family could have turned against her in a single night. The lawyer then informs Sofia that until her trial date in six months, she is to be remanded to Arkham State Hospital for 24/7 observation. After a tearful good-bye with Alberto, Sofia is taken by the police to Arkham.
Arkham Inmate[]
Unnerving First Night[]
Sofia's initial intake process to enter Arkham is shown to be deeply traumatizing. She is stripped, scrubbed down, and subjected to an invasive cavity search. Afterwards, she is chained by her neck, wrists, and ankles before being led to her cell. She meets Arkham's head doctor, Ventris, as well as his assisting doctor, Julian Rush. Ventris explains how Sofia will be in a solitary cell during the majority of her six-month institutionalization, and will not be allowed any visitors. She reitierates, not for the first time, that she is innocent. Shortly after, she meets her next-door cellmate, Magpie, who whispers to Sofia through a hole in the wall. She began to ramble about Sofia's alleged crimes, which sends Sofia into a breakdown.
Ambushed by the Inmates[]
During her first day at Arkham, an unchained prisoner named Abby is somehow released into the mess hall, where she singles out, attacks, and berates Sofia for her alleged crimes. All the other innmates holler in support and no one moves to help Sofia, as they all believe she is a murderer of women. Later on, as Sofia examines her badly bruised arm, Julian enters her cell to check in on her. She thinks that the unchained prisoner was released on purpose to attack her, likely spurred on by her father's machinations. She then dismisses Rush, saying that she sees through his line of questioning; what has been disguised as questions towards her wellbeing are actually designed to support the the argument that she is paranoid, violent, and unstable. She also states that she is aware of how he and everyone else at Arkham have already presumed that she is guilty of her accused crimes, words which seem to disturb him.
Witnessing Abby's Suicide[]
Sometime later, Sofia is led to an empty mess hall, surrounded by guards, and handed a fork. Then, another group of guards brought in Abby, except they are now chained as per procedure. The guards tether Abby to a table, and roughly shove the two towards one another. Sofia raises the fork in her hand in defense and the two scuffle briefly, during which she drops the fork. Sofia then takes a step back, realizing what is happening. She asks those in the room if this is a setup for Sofia to kill Abby, lending further credence to the case against her. Abby begins to beg for Sofia "to just end it", after which she begins to violently stab herself in the neck in an apparent suicide. Sofia screams in horror and reaches for Abby, but is dragged away by the guards. It is implied that the blame for their bloody death was then pinned on Sofia, as she suspected.
Alberto Falcone's Update[]
At the end of the six month period, Sofia is finally permitted to see a visitor- Alberto has come with news about her trial. Unfortunately, the trial has been cancelled entirely, as Dr. Ventris has submitted a report to the judge stating that Sofia is not fit to stand trial and that she should instead remain at Arkham indefinitely. The judge has already agreed, and there is nothing more that can be done in her defense. Sofia begins to laugh blithely while Alberto pleads with her to remain strong, insisting that he will find a way to get her out. However, Sofia dismisses him and walks out in silence. Later on that day in the mess hall, Sofia violently murders Magpie for all to see by smashing her head repeatedly against the corner of a table. Having finally snapped, Sofia looks directly at Dr. Ventris and screams, "I told you I was f*cking innocent!".
Rehabilitation and Release[]
During her time at Arkham , Sofia was routinely subjected to electroshock therapy by Dr. Ventris and Dr. Julian Rush. Out of guilt, Dr. Rush eventually quit Arkham and started his own psychiatric practice. Sofia stated that the guards also stripped her bare every morning, which Sofia found humiliating, feeling she was being turned into "a thing". She also was forced to read every article and story from newspapers about her alleged crimes as "the Hangman". After a while, she began to think there was nothing left of herself, so she stopped caring about her future. However, Alberto Falcone continued used to visit her every week, always telling her that she a still had a future left that she needed to keep fighting for. [2]
Return to Gotham[]
Alberto Falcone's Disappearance[]
Sofia ultimately spent ten years in Arkham State Hospital, until she was exonerated. Shortly after leaving the hospital, Alberto Falcone (now the de facto head of the Falcone Crime Family) took care of Sofia and protected her fiercely, with her claiming that he never even wanted her to even leave the house unguarded.[2] However, the rest of the Family treads carefully around her, remembering all too well the parts they played in her being institutionalized.

Letter from Selina Kyle[]
While in her cell, staring blankly at the wall while sitting on her bed, Julian Rush entered her cell and informed her on her most recent mail. He listed one in particular that she should read, explaining it came from a woman named Selina Kyle, whom claimed to be her half-sister. Those words caught Sofia's attention, and she took the letter and read through it. Delighted with the revelation that she still had family, Sofia smiled.
Personality[]
- "Am I crazy? Is it all in my head? Tell me. Tell me. Tell me that I'm... that I'm too emotional, and that I have an overactive imagination, and that I shouldn't take things so personally."
- ―Sofia Falcone to Penguin[src]
Sofia's personality is deeply complex. As most would assume for the daughter of Carmine Falcone, she is power-hungry, violent, and very dangerous, and is unnerving to the point that nearly everyone (including the Penguin) feels nervous just being around her. However, prior to her time at Arkham, she demonstrated a completely different personality; while still dangerous and calculating, Sofia was initially the picture-perfect mob heiress, which led to her being Carmine's "favorite child", and eventually appointed as his heir (however short-lived that may have been). She was reliable and exacting, and generally conducted herself in a way befitting her status in the Family. It can be noted that even during her time at Arkham, she was able to mastermind the development of a new addictive drug based on the medications that the other prisoners had been taking, demonstrating her ingenuity and dedication to the family business. Beyond this, Sofia was often shown to be a good judge of character, being one of the very few people who never underestimated Oz, recognizing early on that he was far more capable than most believed him to be. She went as far as to even apologize to him for the unfair treatment he was subjected to by her father and his lackeys, and expressed sympathy as someone who was also dismissed and underestimated by the Family.
However, after her time at Arkham, Sofia's personality has undergone major changes. Where she was previously seen as a reliable (if not respectable) higher member of the Family, she is now largely regarded as a dangerous animal, not to be trusted. While sometimes able to present her previous levels of formality and composure, whenever she senses that she is being gossiped about or judged, she will lash out. In a lesser example, she has developed a tendency to disregard her previous upbringing and behavior, now expressing a disinterest in maintaining decorum (something Carmine had drilled into her and Alberto as children). In fact, she often makes a show of having extremely poor manners, going so far as eating pasta with her bare hands while at her brother's memorial service and putting her elbows on the table at a fancy restaurant where her father used to take her.[2] In a more extreme example, Sofia's previous allegiance and loyalty to the Family is now close to nonexistent, to the point where they could literally all hang (pun intended) for all that she cares. This extreme change in her values is rooted in the Family's sudden betrayal of her when Carmine arranged to have her framed for "the Hangman" murders. While she still seems to value the concept of the Falcone family (ie. maintaining their pride and dignity, especially against the Maronis), she has very little regard for most of its individual members outside of Alberto and the few men still loyal to her.
Her time in Arkham State Hospital also seems to have changed her very nature, turning her more sadistic and violent than she may have been before. Prior to her institutionalization, she claims that she would never have killed anyone or at the very least, she would never have executed crimes as grisly as "the Hangman" murders. This claim could contradicted by her willingness to succeed her father as the next head of Falcone family, as it's very likely that she was aware and had participated in some of organized crime and violence it took to keep the Family successful. However, the extent to which she was violent prior to going into Arkham is unknown, and it can be assumed she was right to claim she had never conducted murders quite in the fashion of her father, who is known to be a ruthless killer. Beyond this, she recalls every abusive action taken toward her at Arkham, and even inflicts some of those same humiliations on Oz while she is torturing him to find more information about Alberto's disappearance.[2] Her ten-year institutionalization has also changed many of her worldviews, turning her into a much more skeptical and cutthroat person, on top of one who is now much more prone to violence. She constantly suffers from nightmares about her past traumas, most of them rooted in her time at Arkham and her knowledge of her mother's death at the hands of her father. Where she was previously a charming socialite and respected member of her Family, she has now become much more reserved, standoffish, and difficult to speak to. Now that she's been discredited (as most still believe she is guilty of the Hangman murders), very few members of the Falcone family even pretend to respect her, and even fewer approach her. Oz is one of the few people she has kept conversations with, and almost all their conversations in the present are tense. [1]
One thing that remains steady in Sofia's personality is her deep love and affection for her brother Alberto. It is shown that Sofia always had a close relationship with him, with Alberto being the only person who visited her every week at Arkham and continued to believe in both her innocence and her ability to survive after she was imprisoned there. Her introduction to the series was driven by her deep concern when he doesn't return home one night, and she is driven to point of showing up unannounced to a meeting between the Falcone capos (Johnny Viti, Milos Grapa, and The Penguin) to ask if anyone had seen her brother. Later on, she goes as far as to kidnap, strip, and torture Oz when she suspects him of foul play. When her brother's body is discovered (in a setup perpetrated by Oz and Victor) she is shown to be horrified, and lets out a scream of anguish.[2]
Sofia is still shown to have a soft spot here and there, though it is often eclipsed by her cold demeanor. At Alberto's funeral, she briefly reconnected with her cousin, Carla. Despite remembering that Carla had written one of the letters that landed her in Arkham, she initially "played nice" with Carla, awkwardly returning her attempts at a "normal" conversation until Gia Viti, her cousin's daughter, appeared. Carla then broke her facade of kindness towards Sofia, clutching her daughter close and seeming to warn her daughter away from speaking to Sofia, who noticed this shift in attitude immediately. [1] Sofia spoke gently to Gia, even gently adjusting her hair barrette. However, everything she said was a subtle threat towards Carla, warning her to watch after her daughter lest anything should happen to her, as "girls in this Family" are always at risk. Later on, when Sofia wiped out the extended Falcone family, she spares Gia out of kindness and mercy, treating the girl with shocking gentleness while simultaneously murdering her entire family (Gia's parents included). She also shows mercy with Eve Karlo and some respect after watching the loyalty she has with her friends, prepared to die for them, describing that kind of bond and loyalty she's never had in her entire life, choosing to spare her life and assures Eve that she won't disclose that she gave her the location of Oz's base.
She has a strong desire of getting free of her father and everything related with him, therefore, she rebuilts the Falcone Crime Syndicate into a new family, renouncing her father's name and starting using her mother's in order to honor her. Wanting to make herself a name, she decides to put an end to the war between Falcones and Maronis and offers Salvatore an alliance using their mutual hate for Oz and their thirst for revenge.
Abilities[]
- "You've always had a nose for bullshit, Sofia."
- ―Luca Falcone[src]
- Deductive Intelligence: Despite her mental instability and perceived unreliability, Sofia is both highly intelligent and quite observant. She picks up the Penguin's involvement in her brother's death solely based on how he talked about a business that was supposed to be a secret between her and Alberto, and pursued this instinct correctly until Oz framed set up the Maroni's to claim responsibility for Alberto's death. Later on, she correctly deduces that there must be someone from inside the Falcones who tipped the Maroni Crime Family off about their Drops route, allowing the Maronis to attack one of their trucks and steal their product.[2]
- "You wanted my reputation to precede me. "
- ―Sofia to Penguin[src]
- Intimidation Factor: Sofia commands an imposing presence and is able to unnerve people the very moment she steps foot in the room. Since being released from Arkham, she's developed a fearsome reputation within her family, as well as all over Gotham. She is recognized often while in public, and often notes the not-so-subtle fear in the eyes of those around her. She may have been intimidating enough as a Falcone crime heiress, but now combined with her Arkham-imposed mental illness, Sofia now has an added layer of instability and an air of violence about her. Even those who view her as just a mentally unwell brat (such as Johnny Viti) are still visibly unnerved by her presence, especially since most remember how she could very well have a vendetta against the whole family.
- Emotional Intelligence: Sofia's ability to read and judge people is one of her premier skills, even after coming out of Arkham with her other social skills noticeably affected. Her observational and deductive skills put together cutthroat evaluations of those around her, from her former driver turned potential kingpin Oz Cobb, to her guilt-ridden (and romantically interested) former psychiatrist, Julian Rush. She is highly pessimistic about most people's characters, but not without good reason. Her experience with her family's betrayal and subsequent ten years at Arkham have shown her the worst sides of human behavior, as well as how to cater to them. In particular, she has a deep understanding of trauma-affected individuals (which is how she views most of the people in Gotham after the city was destroyed by The Riddler), and turns this knowledge to her advantage when returning to the world as a member of the Falcone drug empire.
- Strategic Planning: Prior to her time at Arkham, Sofia was shown to be highly reliable and intelligent, which is what led to her father initially appointing her as his heir. While her institutionalization may have put a halt to any plans she could've set in motion had she remained in such high control of the Family, she proved her continued strategic planning skills while a prisoner at Arkham. After her release, it is shown that while Oz Cobb may have believed that Alberto had masterminded the creation of a revolutionary new drug to rebuild the Falcone empire, it was actually Sofia who originated the idea and orchestrated its production from within Arkham. Bliss, as the drug came to be called, was based on the "candy" pills that Sofia and her fellow prisoners were routinely given as a "reward" for obedience. She recognized its potential as a gamechanger in the grief-stricken and crime-addled Gotham, and worked strategically with Alberto during his weekly visits to develop the idea. After his death, and after realizing that she had truly lost her place in the Family, Sofia quickly adapted all of her and Alberto's plans to fit her own new agenda of disrupting and ultimately usurping power from the remaining Falcones for herself.
