Inside Man is the second episode of the first season of The Penguin.
Synopsis[]
"Sofia works to secure her family's strength, while Oz attempts to play both the Falcone and Maroni families to his advantage."
Plot[]
Sofia undergoes therapy and suffers a panic attack after hallucinating Alberto's murder, but she is calmed down by her therapist, Julian Rush. She then storms out of Rush's office, despite his pleas to help her, she insists she isn’t safe, just "home".
Meanwhile, Penguin visits Salvatore Maroni at Blackgate Penitentiary again, who is angry over his actions. Penguin defends his decision and convinces Maroni to continue their partnership by attacking a drop convoy that will be moved to Robbinsville. Penguin gives them details on how to attack the shipment and that he will be waiting in the back, however, he is surprised when Johnny Viti appears and forces him to go in the armored truck instead of the car. Maroni's crew arrives and intercepts the convoy, killing many of Falcone's henchmen. Penguin barely escapes alive and claims his innocence to Viti. However, Sofia is certain that someone within their crew is feeding intel to Maroni. Falcone's brother, Luca Falcone, is brought in to take Carmine's place as boss of the Falcone Crime Family and warns Sofia to stay out of their business. Unsatisfied, Sofia and Castillo bribe corrupt GCPD detective Marcus Wise with Drops to investigate the heist.
Penguin is called to his mother's house, after his landlord reports that her dementia has been worsening. Penguin refuses to get her into permanent care and keeps paying him to stay with her. After Alberto's funeral, Sofia gets a call from Detective Wise that he has kidnapped Ervad Hakimi, Maroni's top capo and one of the survivors of the Drops heist, and that he could tell them who the informant is. Maroni's wife, Nadia Maroni, assigns Penguin to retrieve Ervad before they can get him to talk and gives Nadia photos of Viti sleeping with Luca's wife Tina Falcone. Penguin sneaks into the mansion, which is hosting the reception for Alberto's funeral. During this, Victor Aguilar tries to sneak diamonds inside Viti's car to frame him for Alberto's murder, but is forced to flee when Falcone's bodyguards see him.
Penguin finds Ervad in the basement and convinces him to frame Viti, but upon being informed by Victor that he was seen, he is forced to kill Ervad with a switchblade. When Sofia and Luca find the corpse, they place the house in lockdown and force everyone assigned to the truck, including Penguin, into a room. Penguin plants the knife on Castillo; Sofia tries to shoot him, but Luca intervenes and executes Castillo himself. Feeling that Sofia is clouded by her vendetta, Luca decides that she will be sent to Italy until their business is settled. That night, Penguin makes Victor dig a grave for Ervad and Castillo, warning him to stay focused or he will end up just like them. He is later called and meets with Sofia at the Falcone family crypt. She asks him for a partnership to wipe out the Falcone family hierarchy so she may step in and take complete control.

Trivia[]
- Visiting his mother, Oz is shown speaking with Frances' landlord in Spanish. Oz's ability to speak a second language was seen in The Batman where Oz caught the Riddler's intentional grammar error with his "el rata alata" riddle before Batman and Gordon did.
- One of the protesters outside the funeral is holding a sign bearing the same question mark symbol the Riddler used in 'The Batman.'
- Oz smokes towards the end of the episode, a classic attribute of his comic book self (and something that Colin Farrell wanted to do back in the first film.)
