The Maroni Crime Family was an Italian-Persian organized crime family founded by Salvatore Maroni in Gotham City. Originally the most powerful crime family in Gotham's criminal underworld, they were usurped by their rivals, the Falcone Crime Family, after Maroni's arrest, which was orchestrated by Carmine Falcone.
Under the manipulation of Oz Cobb, they engaged in a gang war with the Falcones for control of the Drops Trade. However, after Salvatore's wife Nadia and their son Taj were killed by Penguin, they allied with Sofia Gigante, who disbanded the Falcone Crime Family and reformed its remnants into the Gigante Crime Family. After Salvatore's death and Sofia's arrest, the Maroni organization became defunct.
History[]
Early Operations[]
Presumably founded by Salvatore Maroni, the Maronis were responsible for numerous crimes, most famously the Drops epidemic in Gotham City and rose as among the most powerful crime families in Gotham. They also had a long-standing rivalry with the Falcone Crime Family. At some point after marrying his Iranian-born wife Nadia, Sal started to include Persian mobsters into his crime family, such as Ervad Hakimi. Sal and Nadia also gave birth to Taj Maroni, who became an enforcer for their family.
Usurped by the Falcones[]
After the death of Thomas Wayne in 2002, the Maroni's went after the Gotham Renewal Fund, using it to launder money and bribe politicians. However, that same year, Sal Maroni and others members of his family were arrested in a sting operation orchestrated by Mayor Don Mitchell, Jr., District Attorney Gil Colson, and Police Commissioner Pete Savage. Maroni would be sentenced to life in Blackgate Penitentiary. This allowed the Falcone Crime Family to take control of the Drops trade from Maroni.
With Maroni imprisoned, and their operation taken from them, the Maronis would lay low over the next twenty years, with the Falcones taking their place as the top mafia family in the city.
Falcone-Maroni Gang War[]
Framed for Alberto Falcone's murder[]
A week after the death of Falcone and the Flooding of Gotham, Sal was visited in Blackgate by Penguin, who proposed an alliance in taking down the Falcones and bringing the Maronis back on top. Sal, however, didn’t trust Penguin and turned his deal down, but reconsidered when Penguin returned his ring to him, which had previously taken by Falcone after his arrest.
Later that day, Alberto Falcone's body was found in the trunk of a car that crashed on the Falcone estate. His ring finger was cut off, and the words "PAYBACK” were written above him. The Falcones believed the Maronis had done this as payback for Carmine ratting out on Sal, and ultimately, a gang war began.
