Wayne Enterprises, also known as Wayne Industries,[1] is a prominent company in Gotham City founded by the Wayne Family. It is owned and run by members of the Wayne Family and Alfred Pennyworth.[2]
History[]
Foundation[]
Wayne Enterprises was founded by the Wayne Family to help curb the many problems faced in Gotham City such as economic mismanagement and decaying infrastructure. In the following years, Wayne Enterprises engaged in acts of philanthropy such as charities and funding to public works and infrastructure. When the company was handed down to Thomas Wayne, he hired Alfred Pennyworth to act as their butler and bodyguard when handling matters of Wayne Enterprises. To that end, Thomas founded the Gotham Orphanage for young orphans and a Renewal Fund.
Assassination of Martha and Thomas Wayne[]
Despite the successes of Wayne Enterprises and Thomas gaining a mayoral campaign, Edward Elliot, an investigative reporter for the Gotham Gazette, discovered dark secrets about the Arkham Family, particularly concerning Thomas' wife Martha Wayne, and her history with mental illness. After Edward threatened to expose this, Thomas, seeking to protect Martha, and their son, Bruce Wayne from emotional damage this would bring, ordered mobster Carmine Falcone to intimidate Edward. However, Falcone instead murdered Edward, much to Thomas' horror. Before Thomas could expose Falcone, Thomas and Martha were murdered by a small-time mugger in an alley, leaving Bruce orphaned and the sole heir to inherit Wayne Enterprises.
